Low back pain is a highly disturbing condition that can significantly affect the quality of life. For individuals suffering from disc compression, herniated, or protruded discs, a sudden movement—whether running, walking, turning, or lifting weights—can lead to cramps, muscle stiffness, or spasms. This can result in difficulty walking and persistent back pain. When mobility is compromised, it can feel like one of the greatest challenges life throws at us. This is precisely the moment to recognize the healing power of our time-tested, ancient Ayurvedic system!

I would like to share a recent case from HLC Ayurveda and Nature Cure Hospital . A 42-year-old accountant came to our center on a Sunday evening in a wheelchair, unable to walk, sit, or even stand due to excruciating pain. His condition had left him in a state of complete despair. His back pain had started six months earlier, and while some medication had provided temporary relief, the pain resurfaced three days prior with intense burning sensations. He was even unable to turn to his sides while lying down.

Upon examination, his SLRT (Straight Leg Raising Test) showed:

- Right leg: 30 degrees – positive

- Left leg: 20 degrees – positive

His investigation reports revealed:

- Straightening of the lumbar spine due to muscle spasm.

- Sacralization of the L5 lumbar vertebrae.

- Disc dehydration in the L3-L4 and L4-L5 intervertebral discs.

- A diffuse disc bulge at the L3-L4 level causing indentation over the anterior subarachnoid space, mild narrowing of the spinal canal, and moderate narrowing of bilateral neural foramina without nerve compression.

- Disc dehydration with a diffuse disc bulge at the L4-L5 level causing indentation of the subarachnoid space, mild narrowing of the spinal canal, and moderate to severe narrowing of the bilateral neural foramina, with mild indentation of bilateral exiting nerve roots at that level.

Ayurvedic Panchakarma treatments began immediately under the guidance of Dr. Sateesha and his team. The patient underwent a series of specialized treatments, including Agnikarma , Viddhakarma , Rakthamokshana , and Vaitarana Vasthi , which delivered remarkable results. By the next day, his SLRT had improved to:

- Right leg: 70 degrees – positive

- Left leg: 60 degrees – positive

He could now walk with much greater flexibility. Following these initial treatments, he underwent further therapies, including various Pottalis , bandages, oil massages, and a combination of Kashayavasthi and Snehavasthi over a 14-day period. By the end of the treatment course, his pain was significantly reduced, and he could perform all activities pain-free.

At discharge, his SLRT was:

- Right leg: 90 degrees – negative

- Left leg: 90 degrees – negative

He left the hospital with immense happiness and satisfaction, and it was evident from the joy in his eyes. Post-treatment, medications and a regimen of strengthening yogic exercises were prescribed for a few months to ensure long-term recovery.

This is just one example of how Ayurveda’ with its holistic approach, can effectively manage chronic conditions like lower back pain. I share this story to highlight the immense healing power of Ayurveda and how it can transform lives.
