Those days where the stomach is cramping like anything, feeling emotionally dull, the stomach feels bloated, and that vital part of our body is oozing out, That’s the “Menstruation” through which every girl celebrates their women hood. You are eligible for conceiving a baby; You are eligible to be called a mother!!!

But why do the majority of women including me see this phase as a bit uncomfortable?? Obviously it is due to the discomforts that each woman is experiencing. According to Ayurveda, during the menstruation time Vata dosha aggravates in our body. Due to this dosha imbalance and due to the accumulation of Vata Dosha, the menstrual flow is getting obstructed and this causes abdominal cramps i.e. dysmenorrhea, bloating, mood swings etc. during this time.

Here are the few herbal remedies which I would like to share with you:

1.Hibiscus tea:

It has excellent analgesic and antioxidant properties. Along with that it can influence the hormonal levels which will be regulating the menstrual cycle.

2.Fenugreek seeds:

Having overnight soaked fenugreek seeds (one handful) in the morning empty stomach will help to reduce the menstrual cramps.

3.CCF tea:

Boil 1 tsp of cumin seeds,1 tsp of coriander seeds,1 tsp of fennel seeds in 600ml of water and strain it. Excellent remedy for regulating the dosha balance in our body as well as reducing the menstrual discomforts too.

4.Horse gram and sesame decoction:

This decoction is very beneficial for dysmenorrhea and for the proper flow of menstrual blood.

Dietary and Lifestyle Recommendations:

Apart from this, following a light, warm and nutritious diet is an integral part of maintaining the proper menstrual health. Dried and fermented food items, bakery items, deep oil fried food items must be avoided to prevent the further aggravation of Vata Dosha. Adequate sleep and rest is recommended during this period.

Sometimes for dysmenorrhea there can be certain underlying causes also such as Uterine fibroid, Polycystic ovarian disease, Endometriosis, Adenomyosis, Pelvic inflammatory disease etc. In such cases we should understand the exact cause through the proper investigations then give a targeted treatment to solve the issue. Especially in PCOD/PCOS, Ayurveda can give wonderful results also.

Success Story:

While I am remembering a case that came to HLC, aged 18 years, she was having quite irregular periods along with heavy abdominal pain while menstruating.

On USG it showed “bulky uterus along with multiple follicles along with the outer edge of the ovaries.” She was quite lethargic along with that TSH was 9mlU/L. She has got admitted here and taken the panchakarma therapies such as Udwarthanam, Churna Swedam,Pathra Potala Swedam,Vamanam, Virechanam, Vasthi etc. treatments along with our specialized weight loss diet(low carb diet).

After 14 days of therapies she left home and was taking Ayurvedic medications for the following 6 months. In 3 months of medication she started getting periods every month. In the next scan she got amazing results. Her TSH level reduced to 5 IU/L and her uterus size came quite normal in size as well as the multiple follicular cysts were absent. She became the cheerful girl she was before a couple of years ago.
